~ Artist Statement ~I am a visual artist, focusing on East Asian brush calligraphy 書法 / 書道 on traditional paper medium. The subjects in my work are deeply rooted in my personal practice of: Martial Arts (Karate, Iaido, Kendo, Tai-Chi), Japanese Way of Tea (Chado), and Japanese Way of Calligraphy (Shodo). These life paths often share converging philosophy and spirituality, and it is these motifs that I choose to express myself artistically. My work is highly influenced from the teachings of my masters in the various disciplines I choose to include in my life. The Japanese Zen practice of "Bokuseki", often translated into English as "Ink Trace", is a way of manifesting one's spiritual energy - through a single breath, into a spontaneous physical and artistic action of ink to paper. Through research and diligent study, new ideas are uncovered and lead to the next path and body of work.
